Haruhi Fujioka
Haruhi is the main character of the story, a lower-middle class first-year high school student who is able to attend Ouran High School through a scholarship provided by the school. Her outward appearance is similar to a boy's due to her short hair and cute face; she had longer hair before but had to cut some of it due to a neighborhood child putting gum in her hair. Shortly after arriving at Ouran, Haruhi accidentally broke a vase worth ¥8,000,000 while in the third music room while she was looking for a quiet place to study, and since then has been forced to work for the Host Club to pay for it. Mistaking her for a male, the club initially had her working as their servant, but they made her a host once they discovered that, beneath her glasses and rumpled clothing, she had a cute face. Her natural charm and relaxed demeanour instantly made her a favorite with some of the club's customers.
Tamaki Suou
Tamaki is a half-Japanese, half-French Ouran High School second-year student and the president of the Host Club, the founding of which was his idea. He is sometimes referred to as the "King" of the Host Club and is by far the most popular host, with a 70% request rate. The usual instigator of all of the Host Club's antics, Tamaki is prone to dramatics and often acts without thinking or overreacts to trivial things; the other members of the club, particularly Hikaru and Kaoru, often take amusement at his expense. At the same time, they almost always follow his lead, and staunchly support him when it's needed. He is the heart and soul of the Host Club -- he is the one responsible for its creation and formation, and without him, it would fall apart. Despite his foolish and often childish behaviour, Tamaki is kind and generous, and is easily moved by the distress of others, even strangers. Once aware of others peoples' problems, he will do all he can to help them and "ascertain justice". He often makes elaborate plans or "strategies" to help them, and will drag the rest of the Host Club into his altruistic schemes despite their protests or indifference. Despite their different personalities and behaviours, Tamaki and Haruhi pretty much share a distinctly strong, somehow utopistic sense of justice that sets them apart from the others. Tamaki is curious and genuinely smitten by the habits and lifestyles of "commoners", or people not as well-off as he and his classmates at Ouran, and goes about experiencing them with enthusiasm (sometimes for Haruhi's benefit, and sometimes for his own).
Kyouya Ootori
Kyouya is a second-year student at Ouran High School, and vice-president of the host club. The "cool type" of the club, he is extremely intelligent and quite calculating, capable of manipulating events to serve any number of purposes. His family is primarily involved in hospital management and the medical industry with various other business interests as well, and supplies the school's medical staff and security (via its 100-member private police force). As the third son, Kyouya is unlikely to inherit leadership of the family's business unless he can surpass his older brothers' achievements to his father's satisfaction. This puts a lot of pressure on Kyouya, but he claims that he cannot think of a more interesting challenge. His family and the Suou family are rivals, so Kyouya initially befriended Tamaki because his father ordered him to for business reasons. However, as time passed, their friendship became genuine. Although Tamaki is the official leader of the club, Kyouya can easily influence Tamaki when he pleases and in a conflict between two of the other members of the club, they follow Kyouya's lead causing Haruhi to refer to him privately as the "Shadow King". In the anime, he was the only Host Club member to realize immediately that Haruhi was a girl, but kept the knowledge to himself in order to see what the outcome would be. He often cooperates with the Host Club's eccentric antics, or even encourages them further, on the grounds that the results could be "interesting".
Hitachiin twins
Mischievous, devious, and otherwise childish, Hikaru and Kaoru are identical twins who often toy with fellow classmate and Host Club member, Haruhi. However, as they got to know her better, they start to care for her deeply, especially since they discovered that Haruhi can tell them apart even when they mess up their hair (the easiest way to tell them apart is the way they part their hair), something that no one has ever done before. When they were very young, a maid they were close to betrayed them, and when they asked her if she could play the 'Which one is Hikaru?' game, she denied, telling them instead that someday someone would be able to tell them apart. They believed that no one could possibly win the game, and that no one cared about them enough to really try. Tamaki Suou, however, in their last year of middle school, repeatedly followed them, tossing out random guesses as to who was Hikaru and who was Kaoru to get them to join the Host Club, citing his intuition each time. Finally they crumbled, and decided to just try out the Host Club, and thus took a step towards a wider world. For this reason, they were originally cynical to the world before joining the Host Club, believing that anyone who is not the other twin cannot possibly compare to their bond, so their relationship with Haruhi is a large part of their life. The Hitachiin twins show many instances of "brotherly love" (which is never defined completely as acting) which gets girls to fall for them left and right.
Mitsukuni Haninozuka
Mitsukuni is the Host Club's "Loli-shota" host and always goes by the nickname "Hunny". Despite the fact that he looks like a 10-year-old and always carries a stuffed toy bunny named "Bun-Bun" with him, Hunny is a senior in Ouran High School and the club's oldest, most "experienced" member. His customers love his adorable and charming behaviour. Indeed, he often calls everyone by affectionate nicknames like "Haru-chan" for Haruhi, "Tama-chan" for Tamaki, "Hika-chan" for Hikaru and "Kao-chan" for Kaoru. The only exception is Takashi Morinozuka, who Hunny calls by his first name of "Takashi", and vice-versa. As cute and defenseless as Hunny looks, he comes from a prestigious, martial arts family who trains most of Japan and other nations' elite guards. Before the founding of the Host Club, Hunny was the captain per of the school's Karate Club, and did his best to seem strict and tough in order to please his father. However, when Tamaki approached him about starting the Host Club and expressed the opinion that being true to one's self is a stronger path than living a lie, Hunny chose to leave the karate club and join the Host Club instead. His decision greatly dismayed his younger brother Yasuchika (nicknamed Chika), who is disturbed by Hunny's childish ways to the point that he thinks Hunny might be an alien.
Takashi Morinozuka
Mori is also a third-year student of the school and is the tallest, most silent member of the club. Despite the fact that he rarely speaks or smiles, his tall, tanned, and handsome figure earns him many customers. According to Kyouya, "his taciturnity is his selling point," and many of his admirers are the more introverted and serious girls at Ouran. He is labeled the "wild type" host. Because Mori acts largely on his instincts, this label fits him rather well. Additionally, Mori is the Japanese national champion in kendo. Moreover, Mori is Hunny's cousin. The Morinozuka family had protected the Haninozuka family for many generations. As the two families were joined by marriage two generations ago, the families became related to each other, thus breaking the master-servant tradition. Nevertheless, Mori still faithfully protects Hunny and is always by his side, attending to his wishes and watching out for him. In many ways, he is like a devoted big brother. However, Mori doesn't spoil his cousin. During the time when Hunny had a toothache, he was the first to get Tamaki to impose a ban on sweets in the Host Club. He often becomes clumsy when feeling distressed. At other times Mori will needlessly baby Hunny for something as minor as a scratch or trip. Generally, Mori doesn't seem to express any emotion. He doesn't appear to care what anyone thinks of him unless it upsets Hunny; that's when Mori starts acting truly strange and defensive. The only other time he reacts to someone is when Umehito Nekozawa puts him in a sticky situation.
